Upcycling your jewelry box
I see lots of wooden jewelry boxes being given to charity shops. People have fallen out of love with them. These are well made pieces and vintage too. I hate to see these lovely pieces being thrown out so why not upcycle them!
It's so easy to do!
Here's what you will need:-
Wooden jewelry box
Small paint brush
Chalk paint
Wax or sealer
Sandpaper to distress
Step 1 - Clean it up
I start by giving the whole box a wipe down with a damp cloth. These boxes are usually dusty. Inside is usually fine unless you have a particularly used box with bits of earring backs and fluff. Again just spend 10 minutes wiping it all away.
Step 2 - Sand it over - Optional
This part is optional as in some cases the box will not need to be sanded down. You may have a box that's particularly full of uneven sides or bits of blobs. By giving it a quick sanding it will give you a smooth surface to paint on.
Remember chalk paint covers most things, so depending on the look you are creating you may wish to leave the lumps and bumps.
Step 3 - Paint it up
Start painting! It's that quick. I usually use a plate with spots of water on and dab my brush into it. Chalk paint can be quite thick and textured and that is fine if you're after that aged look. If you want a smoother finish you may want to use a bit of water with a flat brush.
I usually end up doing 2-3 coats and this gives full coverage. I like to give it a little sand at this point. A little on the corners and lightly all over.
Step 4 - Wax or Sealer
Applying a wax or sealer seals the paint in and provides protection against wear. I swop between the two depending on what look I'm aiming for. It really transforms the box once applied and gives it a complete finish.
Step 5 - Distress, Distress, Distress!
This part is totally up to you! Sand back edges, and sides, along bottoms and tops of drawers as much or little as you like.
Sometimes you're afraid to distress because you like what you have painted so much!. I promise once you get started you will get into it and will love achieving the distressed shabby look!
Good luck! Go find yourself a jewelry box!
